What is Hot Potatoes?

The Hot Potatoes suite includes six applications, enabling you to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web. Hot Potatoes is not freeware, but it is free of charge for publicly funded, non-profit, educational users who make their pages available on the web.

Which Version to Use

 USE VERSION 5!!

While the latest version of Hot Potatoes has a prettier look and some new features, it is not compatible with many computers in today's classrooms. PCs must have Internet Explorer 6.0 or newer, and Macs must be using OSX and the Safari browser. I made the mistake of using the latest version of Hot Potatoes for my VDOE 2003 Released Items tests, only to hear from users all over the state that they were *unable to use them in their schools.

*Note - I've since re-done all of the grade 3 and grade 5 VDOE Released Items tests, and will be working on the grade 8 and EOC 2003 tests after the VSTE conference.

What You Need

You must register in order to use the software. Registration is FREE. Just go to their registration page and fill in the form. A registration key will be e-mailed to you immediately.

After registering, click on the help menu after opening one of the Hot Potatoes applications. Chooser "Register" and fill in the registration key information exactly as it was in the e-mail received with this key.

Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT 4.0 or above (A version of the suite is also available for the Macintosh.)

A recent version of Netscape Navigator or MS Internet Explorer

Access to a Web server (if you wish to deliver your exercises on the Internet)

To use the exercises, your students will also need an appropriate browser. They do NOT need Hot Potatoes itself.

If you know HTML and JavaScript, you will be able to exercise more control over the final format and style of your exercise pages, but this is not a requirement for creating useful interactive pages with Hot Potatoes.

Ideas for Use in Schools

Create "Dollaraire" activities. Ideal for use in the one-computer classroom.
Create activities using the varying Hot Potatoes formats as study guides for student use at home, in your computer lab, or at work stations in the classroom.

Teach your students to create Hot Potatoes activities and then let them take each other's quizzes. (Recommend Grades 4 and above)

Get together with teachers on your team and divide the content areas for creating activities. Post all of these activities for sharing with one another.
