| How to play in a one-computer classroom: |

|
| There are a number of ways in
which to choose which students will be in the "Hot Seat." The easiest way
is to simply have students put their name on a slip of paper and draw one
from a hat. Everyone in class has an equal chance of being a contestant.
Another, more competitive way is to write a problem on the board. It can be a question relating to anything that has been taught this school year. Students write their answer on a slip of paper, put their name on it, and put it in a hat. When a piece of paper is drawn, the person whose name is on the paper is only eligible if they answered the question correctly. (Eligibility requirements have been met. More closely mimics the rules of the game show.) Examples of questions I've used are putting words in ABC order (primary grades), putting numerical values in order which may include decimals or fractions depending on grade level of students, matching famous people with their accomplishments, and so on. |
| Question 1: .01 | Question 6: .06 | Question 11: .15 |
| Question 2: .02 | Question 7: .07 | Question 12: .20 |
| Question 3: .03 | Question 8: .08 | Question 13: .25 |
| Question 4: .04 | Question 9: .09 | Question 14: .50 |
| Question 5:
.05 1st Safe Haven |
Question 10:
.10 2nd Safe Haven |
Question 15: $1.00 |
| Safe
Haven - If a contestant makes it to a safe haven question and
answers it correctly they are guaranteed to leave the hot seat with at
least that amount.
For example a contestant answers the first five questions correctly, they have reached the first safe haven. Then the contestant goes on to answer questions 6 and 7 correctly, but makes a mistake on question number 8. That contestant leaves the hot seat with a nickel (the guaranteed amount up to that point). Another contestant makes it to question 10 and answers it correctly. They are guaranteed to leave the hot seat with at least a dime. They go on to answer questions 11, 12, 13, and 14 correctly and then miss question 15. That contestant leaves the hot seat with a dime (the last guaranteed amount before becoming a "Dollaraire." |
| A contestant wins the game by
answering 15 questions in a row correctly. The winner receives $1.00. (I
always take a digital picture of the winner holding their dollar, so I can
print it out for them as a keepsake, and so I can add it to my class
webpage.) If the contestant makes a mistake, they lose, and are thanked
for being a contestant on "Who Wants to Be a Dollaraire?" They leave with
a dime if they made it past the tenth question, a nickel if they made it
past the fifth question, or nothing if they didn't make it past the fifth
question.
There are three "Lifelines" on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" In our modified version there are also three lifelines, but with slightly different variations: Phone a Friend = Ask a Friend - Contestant may ask one person in the classroom for assistance with a question. Poll the Audience = Poll the Class - The students in the class raise their hands when the emcee (teacher) reads each answer choice. The contestant can see by the number of hands raised which answer receives the most votes. 50/50 = 50/50 - Teacher removes two of the wrong answers leaving the correct answer and one incorrect answer for the contestant to choose from. |
